The current Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) committee began its journey on October 7, 2021. However, following political changes on August 5 last year, several directors resigned, leaving the board to be managed by 10 members, including two new additions. During this reshuffle, Aminul Islam Bulbul replaced Faruk Ahmed.
With the tenure of the present committee set to expire in early October, attention has now turned to the upcoming BCB elections. Discussions are already underway regarding potential presidential candidates, with names such as Tamim Iqbal, Faruk Ahmed, and Aminul Islam Bulbul in the spotlight. Although Mahbub Anam’s name was also mentioned, he recently announced that he will not be contesting.

Winning the BCB presidency, however, is no simple task. According to the BCB constitution, 76 of the 171 councilors represent Dhaka clubs. Meanwhile, 12 of the 25 board members come from club cricket, while 10 are chosen from divisional and regional levels. This councilor structure makes their support crucial for any aspiring candidate.

Former director Rafiqul Islam Babu told, “In the current situation, the bigger question is who will be the president before who becomes a director. Until that is clear, no one can say for certain who the president will be.”

Commenting on the possible candidates, Babu added, “Many names are being circulated, but most are speculative. Ultimately, it is up to the individual councilors to decide whether or not to run and whom to support.” He also praised Mahbub Anam’s long-standing contribution, saying his two decades of experience make him one of the most knowledgeable figures in cricket administration.
Another former director, Sirajuddin Alamgir, stressed the need for balance: “I want fresh blood to come in, but there should also be a mix of experienced figures. Repeating the same faces over and over is not ideal.”

Alamgir also noted that Tamim Iqbal’s international achievements and reputation could make him a strong candidate, provided he adapts to the administrative nature of the role. On the other hand, he expressed doubts about Faruk Ahmed’s prospects and highlighted that Aminul Islam Bulbul is another name gaining attention.
As the election approaches, the debate continues will experience, cricketing legacy, or fresh leadership shape the future of Bangladesh cricket governance?
